Start of Something New

Baby Gray met his teacher yesterday. He got to explore his classroom, play with the toys, and talk to his new friends. I loved watching him interact with the children he had never met before. We practice introducing himself often, and I got to see him employ it several times. I love the little person he is becoming!

Disclaimer: not actually a photo from meeting his teacher; I’m that mom who forgot to take a photo.

I remember not so long ago when I was in that same classroom. I’m pretty certain it’s the room where Auntie Heather came in as the “new girl” and I was her special friend. We see where that’s gone. Not to mention, Mr. Gray, LC, and countless others went there as well. I’m excited about the possibilities of some lifelong, lasting friends for our boy. I can’t wait to watch him grow and learn this year!

Gimme a Break

Last week I took an unintentional break from most of my regularly scheduled media stuff. I still posted photos and a few things here and there, but it was nice to take a little break once I got back from Montreal (more on that soon).

I spent some time with Mr. Gray and the boy, ran errands, rested, caught up with friends, and just sat. It was a good way to end the summer. The good news? I missed this little space! I missed sharing, loving, and processing here. I’m baaaacck!

Today we start our fall routine. Baby Gray will be attending a two-day preschool, and I’m excited for him. He has been asking me consistently about going to school, so we signed him up! He’ll go to the same place Mr. Gray and I (along with numerous other friends and family members) went. This week he will have “transition days,” and he’ll start full-swing next week. This weekend it’s time for some Fightin’ Texas Aggie Football! School and football. It doesn’t get more fall than that.

Guest Post: Helping Our Kids Expand Their Worldview

I’m headed to Montreal today with a group from Revolution, so I thought I’d turn it over to Jamie Ivey in my absence. I’ve never actually met Jamie, but I “met” her a few years ago through a radio contest a friend was in; I started following her blog and recently had the opportunity to guest post on her space as well.

You can see travel photos, updates, etc here or here.
OK, bye now!

Recently one of our favorite babysitters stopped by to tell us goodbye.  Over the years we have had many babysitters that we love leave us for bigger and better things.  College, husbands, and other jobs all seem to be more important than us!  This time our babysitter was leaving to go overseas and work as a teacher.

As she stood in our living room and my kids and I hugged her neck and told her that we loved her, I thought it would be great for us to pray over her before she left.  Yes she’s going to teach school, but her ultimate goal is to tell others about Jesus while she’s there.  As we got ready to pray Deacon looked up at her and said “Do you think you might die while you are there?”.  Her and I kinda looked at each other and then answered in the best way we knew how to for a seven year old.  We told him that she probably wouldn’t, but, yes she could.  He nodded and in his sweetest prayer asked God to keep her safe and not let her die when she tells people about Jesus.

Aaron and I desire for our kids to grow up with an understanding that there’s more to this world than what they see in Austin, Texas.  That there are lives that are lived in fear of death because of their beliefs.  That there are children that don’t have access to water from their faucet whenever they want.  That there are countries that don’t let girls go to school.  We want them to know the world for what it is, and not think everything looks like their surroundings.

Here are a few ways that we are trying to figure this out around here.

#1 This sounds so elementary, but we have a world map in our kids room.  This isn’t just for decoration, but yet it’s for us to point out places around the world as we talk about them.  When we pray for our missionary friends, we take it further and actually find the country they live in.

#2  We have pictures hung up of friends that serve in other countries in our window by our dining room table.  This way as we pray we ask our kids to pick who they want to pray for.  We talk about these people and update our kids on their lives and ministries.  They see their faces as they pray for them.

#3  We sponsor 3 kids through Compassion International and actually took our 9 year old to meet one of them in Haiti this year.  Their pictures are hanging by the dining room table, and we know where they live on our world map.  These are kids just like them in so many ways, and yet so different in so many ways as well.

By no means are we experts in this area, but we’re figuring it out one day at a time as well.  My number one advice would be to talk with your kids about these things.  You can put maps up and pictures of missionary friends all day long, but if you never talk to your kids about these places and people they will be just that, people and places, and not someone or someplace that is REAL to them.
Just like when my kids prayed over their babysitter as she left to go across a giant ocean to tell people about Jesus.  She’s a REAL person to them, and their worldview was just expanded by praying over her, loving her, and knowing exactly where she lives on our big map in Cayden’s room.

Jamie Ivey lives in Austin with her husband Aaron, who is the worship pastor at The Austin Stone Community Church, and their four kids.  She loves to read good books, eat Mexican food, and go on dates with her man.  She’s thankful for the grace she receives each day as she parents her children and navigates through this big crazy world.  You can find her blogging at DreamingBigDreams

Ten!

I have a friend who does a Tuesday Ten, and today it’s just the thing to do. Seems like a good day to get a jumble of things all in one place.

1. I am so excited about Montreal with our team in a few days! I’ve never been anywhere like it, and I don’t know much about it, so I keep asking Mr. Gray silly questions about the whole thing (he hasn’t been there, either). You’d think I’d never heard of the internet.

2. My big-talkin’ boy actually did mutton bustin’ Friday! I was so excited. I didn’t really think he’d do it. Full recap tomorrow.

Mutton Bustin

3. I have always talked in my sleep, but apparently, I’m also walking or something in my sleep now, too. Mr. Gray said I wasn’t in bed part of last night. I don’t remember anything. Nice. Sorry in advance, Montreal roomie.

4. One of my favorite pairs of fall shoes has a seam that’s pulling loose, and I thought I’d use the summer to get them fixed. I never did. It’s almost time to start wearing them again. Here’s to hoping I get them to the shoe hospital. Stat.

5. I don’t ever turn my phone ringer on. Ever. I hate that there is no way to set it to vibrate only as the ringtone (you can for all the other alerts). Then when I have to turn audio on to view something and accidentally forget to turn it back off I wouldn’t have to jump out of my skin upon hearing the accidental ringer. PS, if you know how to override that, leave me a comment or shoot me an email.

6. I filled out all of Baby Gray’s preschool paperwork last night. It would have been so nice to have some of the liberties these teachers have (it’s a private school) when I was teaching. I kept reading sections aloud to Mr. Gray in awe.

7. I can’t believe he’s going to preschool! Where on earth has the time gone? I didn’t think I’d be one of those moms, but the closer it gets, I’m convinced I just might be.

8. I’ve been getting up at 4:50 Mondays and Wednesdays to get a quick run in and do a little yoga before Baby Gray gets up, and I love it. It’s early, but it’s a great addition to my routine those days.

9. Only eighteen days to Fightin’ Texas Aggie Football! Whoop! I’m ready! Well, except for that whole noon game part. Whose idea was that, anyway?

10. Does anyone else hear Varsity’s Blues‘ Billy Bob anytime they think of the number ten? It’s not a good one to have in your head. Inappropriate.

Look for Him

Yesterday morning, as we were on our way to church, this popped up in my Facebook feed:

Looks like any other Bible verse, yes? Well, yes and no. See, last week of last year, I was clinging tighter to that verse that I had any scripture that I can remember in my life. It was a promise, a declaration from God about what we were going through. It was a perfect way to start the morning of the 11th, a year later.

As my day went on, this popped up on Instagram:

Again, seemingly ordinary. But again, an integral verse in my life this time last year.

God is in the details. He knew I needed those verses last year, and on the day that began a fresh season for us this year, he refreshed my memory, let me see them in a different light, and continued the peace He gave me a couple of weeks ago as we get ready to take on some other changes in our lives.

I challenge you to look for Him in the details today. Slow down. What are you missing? Where has He been all along that you just weren’t seeing?

Wishing for Words

I wish I had words for today. I really do. It’s not a story for me to keep; it’s His for me to tell. I don’t have the words to do it justice yet. I will. I have no doubt. For now, I have this:

Seems strange, I know. It’s integral to today, though, and I don’t ever want to forget it. Especially not before I have the words to tell it in its entirety.

He gives us stories to share, so that we can spread His light throughout the world. I pray that soon I will have the words to shout this story from the rooftops: salvation, redemption, life, and love.
