Thumpin’ Bumpin’ Runaway Pumpkin

Friday evening we headed to a pumpkin carvin’ party.

Mr. Gray facilitated the caramel apple station–Baby Gray’s first!

Caramel Sprinkles

Baby Gray “helped” us (I’m using us pretty generously here; I took photos and helped Mr. Gray find a pattern) with the carving–you know, right before he got grossed out by the seeds and ran to the playroom.

Scoop

Mr. Gray is like our own personal Superman. He free-handed his design and then cut it out like a pro!

The kids bobbed for apples–another first for Baby Gray!

We took our jack o’lantern home–I was so worried it would break–and planted him right on the front porch.

Home of the 12th Man

I’m pretty sure we are now truly the home of the 12th Man.

No Tricks, All Treats!

The creepy and cute of Halloween is here! I’ve compiled a couple of my favorite treats, snacks, and decor from the past couple of years so you can get planning for your Halloween events!

By the way, if you’re reading this in an email (sign up here to get The Gray Matters straight in your inbox everyday), the Pins probably aren’t showing up correctly (thanks, Pinterest). You’ll need to open the post in your browser to see them all.

So Tell Me What You Want (What You Really, Really Want)

You sang that title, didn’t you?

It seems like summer is just winding down, but I’m already in full-on Christmas shopping mode. Granted, I like to be pretty close to finished by Thanksgiving, but still.

Assuming some of you are crazy like me (or want to Pin it to remember later), I thought I’d throw a few things out there that are perfect for the preschoolers in your life.

1. Stuff to do: museums, inflatable play places, zoo admissions, the list goes on! It allows us to make memories and enjoy family time. Some of the best gifts we’ve gotten have been things to do rather than things to have.

2. Clothes: I know, I know, they’re not as fun for them to open and sometimes they just throw them aside. In reality, though, it’s a great time to stock up on things. With a September birthday in our house, Christmas always finds us right in between sizes. He is still wearing a lot of his current size but able to jump up to the next soon. It works well for us! (Want to make it more fun? Stuff some goodies in the pockets for him to find.)

3. Craft supplies: crayons, markers, stamps, Play-Doh, again, stuff to do. Consumables. There are never enough!

Masterpiece

4. Monthly subscriptions: Citrus Lane (our favorite–use this link to get a discount off your first order), Kiwi Crate (we’ve been wanting to try this one), Highlights Magazine (he loves the games and stories; comes in several age ranges), whatever tickles your fancy (there are tons more; shoot me a note if you need other ideas). Baby Gray loves mail; he asks to check it every day. It makes it even more fun when things are for him.

5. Classes: think gymnastics, dance, piano, pitching lessons, batting coaches, and the like. They’ll think of you each time they go!

6. Gift cards or cash: it’s not the most personal gift in the world, but sometimes it’s the most practical. It’s perfect for mailing and letting Mom pick something out when the time is right (change in development leads to change in toys; clothes, carseats, shoes get outgrown).

About that New Name

Before this little guy was born, he didn’t have a name. Around these parts, we took to calling him Baby Gray.

A month or so before his third birthday, I started thinking maybe it was time to make his name “grow up” a little. You know, three is not a baby anymore.

 Three

I had a name in mind. I was ready to make the switch on his birthday. I started typing. It didn’t fit. I came up with something else. I wasn’t sold. I polled the audience. Results were mixed. So I made a decision. He’s my baby. Forever. Three or thirty-three, he’s Baby Gray ’round here.

Mix ‘n Match

If there’s one thing I hate, it’s letting good dessert go to waste. Sometimes that means it’s time to get creative.

A while back, I bought some break ‘n bake cookies that I never baked. I also had some remnants of homemade chocolate butter cream frosting coming far too close to the end of its shelf life. Bake, grab a cookie scoop, sandwich them, and voila!

Cookies

“Little hamburgers!” exclaimed a surprised boy, just up from his nap. Much tastier than little hamburgers, though.

Halloween How-To

Usually, when September 1st rolls around, I have Mr. Gray dig my fall boxes out of the attic so I can get a little decor going around here. Unfortunately, this year, the boxes are packed and unobtainable. We got a few pumpkins from the pumpkin patch and Annie found us a replacement flag for the front yard, but we didn’t really have anything for the house.

I don’t usually put Halloween stuff out until October 1st, so I had some time to decide what, if anything, I wanted to do this year.

I hem-hawed around about it a bit and finally decided just to do my favorite little candy decoration and call it done.

It usually takes a trip of two to Target to find the ghost Peeps for this, but Friday’s trip was a success!

Ingredients

We got home and put everything out on the counter so my little helper and I could easily get to it.

We lined the inside of the vase with the ghost Peeps (facing outward).

Then we poured the candy corn in, and TA-DA!

Paging Dr. No Pants

This child of ours is so much like me sometimes, it’s crazy. Take today, for instance, he’s wearing a long sleeve shirt, jeans, and boots. He’s trying to will fall in just like me (I may or may not have on a dress, tights, and boots myself–and no, I didn’t choose for him).

Like I always say, If you dress for it, it will come!

Take this lovely boxer outfit:

Boxers

Add a hoodie, and you’re ready for fall at a moment’s notice!

On his daily rounds, though, he much prefers to wear as little as possible.

Dr No Pants

Even his doctor duties can’t get him to add pants!

10 on 10.10

I love numbers and correlations between numbers. They’re fun. In honor of today’s fun date (too bad the year didn’t play along) here are ten things you probably didn’t need to know.

1. This is Pierre (he’s a porcupine). Get used to seeing him; I love this sweater.

Pierre

2. I don’t drink tea. I know, I know, how am I a true southerner?

3. My son is too tall for his jeans. It bugs me to let him wear high waters. He’s three; does anyone else care but me?

4.  Barbecue is delicious, but I sure hate smelling like it the rest of the day.

5.  Haircut day is one of my favorite days of the month. I love getting freshened up!

6.  I think I’m actually starting to look forward to living in our one-bedroom camphouse for a while. It’ll be a good time to purge, refocus, and get back to the basics.

7. One of my least favorite things to do is pump gasoline.

8. My fall box is packed, and I can’t decorate. The scarecrow flag and pumpkins on the porch are going to have to suffice this year.

9. When people are not mindful of their language (not just “bad” words) around my son, it makes me crazy. He repeats everything, and he is good with context clues and learning what the words mean. Therefore, he can integrate the word into his vocabulary and use it fully. Lovely. Watch your mouth, please.

10. Reading the book after watching the show/movie is never the way to go.

Mushy Mama

This little freckle-faced boy has completely stolen my heart.

Pumpkin

That’s nothing new, really. It’s just something I’ve become more aware of in the past few days. I love being his mom. I love his little personality and all the things that come with it. I love the time we get to spend together, just he and I. I love our little traditions and routines.

We have created so many fun memories over the past three years. We have so many more to create! I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
