Dirty Lyin’ Scoundrel

In a twist on the old ice breaker, how ’bout Two Truths and a Lie? Do you know which is which?

1. I once cut the tip of my thumb almost completely off while trying to cut the label off a SpaghettiOs can with a butcher knife. There were tattoos under the label. Lots of blood and fourteen stitches later, I never got my tattoos.

2. One year, in less than a 6 month period, I hit three parked cars. Those are the only accidents I’ve ever claimed on insurance; we traded meat for body work on my car. I felt like such an idiot every time. My phone was not involved in any of them.

3. On a ski trip back in the day, I told Mr. Gray I wanted to go to the top of the mountain with him. (Yes, I’m as cautious when I ski as everything else I do.) We got off the lifts at the top, took some super cute photos at the peak, I freaked out, and we rode the lift back down the mountain.

Ski

Which is which? Leave your guess, and I’ll disclose the lie later this week!

Create Fashion

Creativity abounds!

Super Hero

His “mask” is packing material from a package we received last week. I love that he was able to see something else we could create! Also, I love that it was free. His fashion choices are too flighty for pricey costumes!

One day he’s saving the world, the next, he’s a future Aggie golfer.

Golfing

Is there anything cuter than this? I think not.

And of course he had to find a helmet at the hockey game he could wear. It’s nothing short of a miracle we don’t own one.

He’s been playing hockey all week!

Digging for Treasure

Last night, we were going through the attic and bringing things down to see what needs to be moved and what can be sold or given away (side note: garage sale coming soon).

We kept getting sidetracked and stopping to reminisce as we brought things down. We had lots of love letters, lots (and lots) of baseball stuff, and several pieces of my grandmother’s art.

Kitchen Box

Oh, how I wish this kitchen had really been in that box. It was full of a bunch of my old toys, though, and some of them were super cool.

It’s really too bad this PC wasn’t in its box. Since it’s Y2K compliant, I’m sure we could still use it.

Y2K
I was pretty sure we only had a few boxes in the attic, but I was quickly proved wrong.
Garage
So many boxes; so much stuff. It was fun to reflect and see what we thought was important at some point in time. Some of it still is, like my grandmother’s art–it will be gracing our walls soon. I had no idea it was there. Other stuff was just that, stuff. No real memories or thoughts attached. It’ll be sifted through.
For as much stuff as I tend to get rid of, it was fun to dream and scheme about where some of the discoveries would be going in our new home. Dishes I was wishing I had last week were surprisingly in our attic. I can’t wait to have them out and use them! We didn’t go through things out of my childhood home when we moved it out, we just stored it. Now I’m finding some big treasures (lots of junk, too). I can’t wait to dig!

It’s Not the Devil in those Details

Can we talk for a minute about how much God is in the details? He is SO in the details–and these are just the things I’m picking up on. No telling how much He’s actually doing back there that I can’t even fathom.

Rewind: August 2008 (abridged; full version here)
Mr. Gray and I move back to the area. We are looking for a church, but we’re not quite sure what we’re looking for, exactly. I shop too much and meet Honey, which leads to an invitation to their Heart Group through Cypress Creek Church. We try the church, and like it, but it’s a little far for us to get plugged in. Heart Group pretty much changes our lives.

Rewind: November 2009 (maybe a touch earlier; full version here)
A friend retweets a pastor who needs help with a mailer. We offer to help. A month or so later, we show up at the church for one of their preview services–not knowing it is the same place. Yep, Revolution Church, stinky gym and all. We were home.

Fast Forward: January 26, 2014
Cypress Creek Church is launching a San Marcos campus. Revolution Church is having its 4th birthday. Same day. Both churches have shaped our lives and our marriage. Both celebrating milestones. All week, I had this feeling we needed to be at Cypress. I struggled all week. I kept telling Mr. Gray I felt like we needed to be there, but it just wouldn’t work out well since we were celebrating at Revolution. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to be at Revolution–I did. That was just it; it was not me telling me to be at Cypress. It wouldn’t have even crossed my mind, but Someone was tugging on my heart.

Saturday evening, we were at a baby shower with a huge group of friends from Cypress. Turns out, the service would be at 10:30; we were planning on attending 1:00 at Revolution. We could do both. He was in the details.

As I stood in my spot during the first worship song, it hit me. We would never have been at Revolution if this had happened four years ago. God had Revolution hand picked, just for us from the beginning. Pastor Rob stepped on the stage, and before he had said ten words, he was speaking to me. Just me. The last few years, the call to go, all of it was affirmed. I fumbled around and tried to take notes on my phone inconspicuously (I was the only one; everyone else had a pen and paper) so I could grab hold of what God was speaking. I didn’t get it all down, but my heart was refreshed. God had put us exactly where we needed to be four years ago, and He is going to do it again when the time comes to actually go.

On the way to Revolution, I told Mr. Gray what I thought about the timing and the message. Yep. He got it, too.

A quick trip up I-35, and we were home. We celebrated four years of life change, four years of lessons learned and preparation to go. I was aware, but I wasn’t sad.

We were hand-picked to be there. No doubt about it.

Abyss

Bottomless pit. That is the best way to describe the purse I was carrying until Saturday evening. I tell you, I could fit anything in that sucker.

Oddly enough, because I could, I did.

I like to be prepared. This is too far, though. As I switched purses while we drove, I was glad Mr. Gray was actually there next to me. Otherwise, I’m not sure it would even be believable to think this much stuff was actually in my purse. (Pretty impressive there is so little trash, though, huh?) My new purse (she’s yet to be named) has pockets and some structure. Hopefully she’ll stay a little more contained.

Ice, Ice, Baby!

When Baby Gray was just a wee, tiny ol’ thing, we had a Texas-style snow day. That’s the only snow or ice he’s ever “seen.” He was much to young to remember it, and I don’t know if he’s ever even seen the photos, so I didn’t bring it up when people started talking about snow this week.

I’ve lived in this great state long enough to know that most of the time, it’s much ado about nothing when we’re talking snow. This morning was no different. We’ve got a decent ice covering, and most of central Texas is shut down. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to be out in it–people here aren’t accustomed to traveling safely in it.

I did have pretty high hopes for Baby Gray’s reaction, and I have to say I was pretty let down. He wasn’t all that interested, and quickly retreated to the house for some fruit (apparently eating ice is not all that filling).

And, of course, he dressed himself.

Sorry about the photo quality there; he wouldn’t stop to let me snap the photo!

My Book Stack

It’s virtual, of course, but the content is the same.

How do you choose what to read? Do you choose the book by its cover? (I do.) Do you choose articles by how many Facebook shares? (I don’t.) I prefer personal recommendations, so here are a few of mine:

Jen Hatmaker: I Miss My Actual Life

Jamie the Very Worst Missionary: Say Anything

She Reads Truth

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
(this one is an affiliate link; heads up)

Your turn! Tell me what you’re reading!

Quiet, Please!

When Baby Gray was born, I switched my phone to silent in the hospital. We had calls and well-wishes coming in, and I didn’t want to wake our sleeping baby. Turns out, that mama-moment was one of the best things I’ve ever done. I haven’t turned the ringer on since.

In fact, I’ve even set my phone (and iPad) to quiet on all the settings (it won’t let me turn the ringer completely to vibrate, so I just set it to a simple alert tone in the event that the switch accidentally gets flipped).

I can hear it just fine if I’m working or expecting a call, but when I put it down to do other things, I don’t feel like the phone is always cutting in on our time. Because I do a lot of my work from my phone, it’s easy for me to get caught up in being on it. This is just a simple step that has helped keep family first.

Hang Ten

It’s T-t-t-tuh-tuesday! I’ve got quite a bit of random to spew, so here we go with the Tuesday Ten.

1. I keep seeing a post about lowering your expectations when you become a mother. It infuriates me every time. Why? I don’t think children bring down quality of life. Involve them in picking up, cleaning up, and having a nice home. It doesn’t have to be hard–or messy. Our son’s only three, and he takes his shoes straight to the closet, puts his dishes in the sink, and cleans up his toys before getting something else out to play with. It can be done; lead by example.

2. I’m pretty sure I’m obsessed with having my eyebrows done. I did nothing to them for years, and now I’m texting my girl Rachelle every five minutes to have them taken care of. High maintenance. (See also: facials and eyelash tinting.)

3. I want to do something big. I don’t know what it is yet, but I hope I’m on the verge of uncovering it. (No better time to embark on something new than when you’re about to move into a one bedroom camp house and build a home, right?)

(This got my wheels turning on the idea. I’m going to go big!)

4. I think Baby Gray is going to miss date night as much as we will when we move. He gets so excited when date Wednesdays roll around. Hopefully someone there will be down to trade (Aunt B? Mrs. B? Bueller?)

5. My run on Sunday was one for the books. I’m pretty sure it was the hip work at yoga Thursday. You better believe I’ll be carrying those stretches out on my own now.

6. We found a stega-turtle Saturday (look at that tail!). I’m not gonna lie, I was pretty freaked out by this dude. He was cool and calm as a cucumber; he stood and let us snap photos, talk, and check him out. Later, we came back to find him, and he was swimming in the creek. I hope he sticks around.

7. Sometimes there are things in your life you don’t realize how much you use until they’re gone. Add silicone whisk to my list. Replacement is on order.

8. I’m really lovin’ Timehop. I’m not sure what took me so long to download it. I love seeing my old Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter posts. This one is my favorite so far!

9. While I was in the grocery store today, I saw Auntie Annie’s pretzels in the freezer section. I doubt they could ever be as good as a hot, fresh one, but I think I’ll end up wishing I didn’t know the grocery store had them before it’s all said and done.

10. I’ve been in such a cooking funk lately. It’s a good thing Mr. Gray cooked prime rib Saturday. Dinners for the week? Done and done!
