Ready, Teddy?

What a crazy week! Our home has been riddled with sickness, and our Christmas goodies have been stuck in storage. I finally had a chance to sneak over today and grab a few things. We now have our little fir trees up (we’re skipping the tree farm this year, I think) and several of our nativity scenes. I was also able to find our Elf on the Shelf.

I mentioned my beef with Santa a few weeks ago. So, you’re probably wondering what in the world made me want to go with Elf on the Shelf. Last year, I read about a couple of different ideas that I really loved for using the elf (or the Christmas Angel) to point kids back to Christ. We’re running with it. We’ll be doing a little of this and a little of that with a little of our own flair to have a Teddy the elf experience that fits the Grays. (If you read nothing else in those two links–or in this whole post for that matter, read the comment in the latter link where the original author likens the elf to a CS Lewis allegory or Jesus’ use of parables; I won’t pretend I can word it as eloquently as she does, but YES, YES, YES!)

Teddy is defrosting on the front porch and ready for arrival!

Teddy

The note he’s tucked into has a little introduction that reads:

Hi, my name is Teddy;
You might not remember.
I’m here to help you spread
Christ’s love all through December.

Each day I will come
And share something new
To spread holiday cheer
So Christ’s love shines through you!

God loves you so much
He sent Jesus our way,
And that’s what we celebrate
On Christmas day!

We are not reading the book that came with the Elf on the Shelf kit, and we don’t necessarily have the no touching rule (although, the elf they have at school does, so he might not mess with it). Teddy isn’t reporting anything back to Santa; he is just here to help us spread joy and love through Christ this holiday season. On his list so far are things like write a card for someone to show them that you care. He’ll have markers, stamps, cards, stickers, etc for Baby Gray when he finds him. He also has a shopping list for our Purple Christmas Tree child that he’ll share with Baby Gray. One morning, he’ll leave money to get some items for the food pantry. Another morning, he’ll be decked out and ready to bake for the postman, the garbage men, and the neighbors. Teddy also has ideas for blessing Baby Gray’s teacher and classmates.

I’m looking forward to starting this with Baby Gray, and I know he’ll love all the assignments Teddy brings him!

#GivingTuesday: Shirts for San Francisco

Got a little story for ya, Ags! Apparently it’s #GivingTuesday around social media land. Who knew? It’s no coincidence that this mission I’ve been wanting to share with you guys landed in my inbox today (despite the crazy today has been, I’m determined to get it out there). I am so excited about what Camille will be doing, and I think you’ll love Shirts for San Francisco. I’ll turn it over to her now (I’ll only interject a time or two).

——————————–

Well howdy from Aggieland!

The place where “WHOOP” is the most common vocabulary word, the people are always friendly, and the touchdown passes are ALWAYS risky. Well my name is Camille Doster and I am a senior (graduating in December, eek) at Texas A&M. I met Mrs. Gray when she was in College Station for one of the games this fall in a little boutique where I work. [Me here: imagine that, I met someone while I was shopping; sound familiar?] She saw me embroidering a shirt and questioned what it was for (as of most 21 year-olds don’t spend their time embroidering…). [Me again: y’all, she was hand-stitching the shirt; I applique with my machine. She was doing it by hand.]

Shirts for San Francisco

I am leaving this next spring to be an intern at an inner-city ministry in San Francisco, California called City Impact. I will be there for around 5 months serving hot meals, leading mission trip teams, and praying over individuals in the community. The ministry is in a section of San Francisco called the Tenderloin District. Here, over 37,000 residents live within less than one square-mile. There are three major crimes recorded every single hour. This sadly, is no Aggieland. City Impact aims to give these people hope—hope in something greater than these poor circumstances. I believe that hope comes through one man and His name is Jesus. So through City Impact, the residents of the Tenderloin are provided with hot meals, drug rehab, a private school for their children, a thrift store that provides affordable clothes, and the love of Christ that is greater than anything a human hand could provide.

Let’s just say I’m really excited. However, we as interns have to raise our own support. Many Aggies go on mission trips and often sell t-shirts that they have had printed. I wanted to do something different. I have always loved making gifts for friends by hand-sewing appliques on t-shirts and sweatshirts so decided to try and raise support by doing so. That is how Shirts for San Francisco was started. I do custom designs (meaning you brainstorm up anything you want), or can repeat any of the ones I have already made if you need a different size or color. I can make sweatshirts or short-sleeved t-shirts, and have even made kid sizes (for Mrs. Gray in particular). I can also ship the shirts to wherever! Shirts are $20 and sweatshirts are $30. It’s been a fun way so far to raise support and also makes a cool, unique Christmas gift. If you are interested in supporting me you can go to the Facebook page and message me. Thank you so much for listening and wish you all a lovely holiday season!

Gig ‘em and God Bless!

The Run Down

This will be surprising to most of you on opposite day, but I tend to be a pretty structured, scheduled person.

A couple of examples of what this looks like in the big picture:
September 1st: fall decor
October 1st: Halloween decor
November 1st: Thanksgiving decor
Sunday after Thanksgiving: Christmasday
Monday after Thanksgiving: Christmas cards go out
December 1st: start unwrapping books and Elf on the Shelf
Weekend after New Year’s Day: winter decor
February 1st: Valentine’s decor

You get the picture (yes, I start in the fall; my brain is still a teacher brain).

Enter illness and a shipping glitch last week. Our Christmas decor is struggling (at best), our Christmas cards are in Kentucky, and I’m okay with it (don’t tell Mr. Gray; I like to give him a hard time). Those are rough guidelines. It’s not the end of the world. They just help me keep from feeling overwhelmed.

I struggled with missing Christmasday; it’s the first time in seven years we haven’t cut down our Christmas tree on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Baby Gray and I did a few things and got a touch of Christmas spirit going. Hopefully, Mr. Gray will be well soon, and we will be on our way to our stored stuff and the Christmas tree farm to get the rest of it pulled together.

Lights

It’s okay to say no, change plans, and be a flexible when life calls for it. We don’t have to do ALL the things ALL the time.

If you get easily overwhelmed, step back for a second. Make a plan–not a hard and fast, live and die by it plan, but a manageable list. Cut some things out. Don’t try to do it all. Nothing will be fun if your family is barely keeping their head above water. Keep the important things and forget about the rest.

No Photos, Please!

Someone woke up grumpus from their nap yesterday. It made family photo time a little bit lot hilarious.

We went from, “I’m not taking a picture!”

No Picture

To a little bit of Mommy and Daddy trickery. (This one also happens to be my favorite. Baby Gray’s face is too cute. And Mr. Gray’s face? Oh, how I love that man.)

Tricked

To a cracking up little boy. I sure hope he always thinks we’re this funny.

Hilarious

It was a great time with food and family, blessings, love, and memories. We have so much to look forward to and so much to celebrate. I love curling up by the fire, talking, laughing, and reminiscing. While I miss the Thanksgiving game and the fun of it all, it was sure nice to not be on a schedule (but hey, next year, get ready to BTHO LSU on Turkey Day!).

Most days, I still can’t believe I get to live this life–so full of love, favor, and joy!

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” –Jeremiah 29:11

30 Before 30

I had this grand idea for a 30 before 30 project, but I didn’t get very far.

1. Run three half marathons.

Yep, that’s as far as I got. And I came up with that on a whim after a good run one evening. I’ve got ’em picked out, I just need to sign up–pronto (so I’ll actually train). My new shoes came in the mail yesterday morning (no, Mom, I didn’t open them yet, I’m just a good guesser).

Maybe it’ll be the 300 before 30 project, and I’ll base it on mileage. I don’t know yet. Maybe I’ll just quietly turn 30 and keep doing what I’m doing. I just don’t know.

As good of an idea as I thought it was, I don’t really have any tangible things I want to check off a list in the next 365 days. We travel, we enjoy each other, and enjoy life. I don’t have any grand plans for the next year (aside from actual goals, which I use to shape my lifestyle more than check off a list–those come at the end of the year). I could add things like sell our home or build the new one, but the timing of that isn’t necessarily in my hands. So, maybe I’ll add things to the list. Maybe I won’t. Maybe I’ll do the mileage thing, maybe I won’t.

Aquarium

What will I do? Continue to love my husband, son, family, and friends; enjoy life; and live in a way that I’m not feeling like I have a deadline to meet to have a fulfilled life.

Tuesday Ten-berlake

It’s Tuesday, I’ve definitely got ten things to say, so Tuesday Ten it is!

1. Tonight I’m going to a Justin Timberlake singalong with one of my oldest friends. I’m not usually a huge fan of his, but it sounded like too much fun to miss.

2. The theme from our Baton Rouge trip was traffic: traffic in the streets, the restaurants, the sidewalks, EVERYWHERE!

LSU

3. I consider all my laundry clean when no more clothes will hang in my closet. Yes, I said it. I have too many clothes (only if my closet hanging rods are the quantifier). I’m pretty sure I should be ashamed of this, but I’m pretty sure I’m not.

4. I’m pumped about the recipes I’m trying for Thanksgiving! I’m hoping to finally find a broccoli rice casserole I love; plus, I am trying to like making things only Mr. Gray enjoys (ahem… pecan pie).

5. I’m beyond excited for Christmasday Sunday! I am so grateful my sweet husband is going to dig our decorations out of storage so we can get in the spirit (even if it’s slightly modified to accommodate house showings and such).

6. All this cool weather makes me wish we had a fireplace! Remedy coming soon.

7. I keep seeing people playing Bingo. I want to play. Do you win money? Is it like gambling? Maybe there are too many unknowns.

8. My car hit 100,000 miles this weekend. I wasn’t driving, so I didn’t get a photo. I’d been waiting and waiting for the day so I could get the photo, and I missed it. It’s not really important, I just thought it should be noted.

9. I loved The Hunger Games books, but I haven’t seen all of the first movie. I have no desire to see the second. I don’t usually like movies based on books I loved. I hate to chance ruining their good memories.

10. I start the downward slide to 30 tomorrow. The big 2-9. I’m not too sure about this. I’m hoping for a 30 before 30 list, but I’m at a loss; what would you want to do?

I’ve Got the Power

Often overheard while donning the cape, “I’m Super H with the power to READ!” I love it! I don’t think Mr. Gray thinks it’s manly enough, but we’ve got plenty of time for that!

Super Tri

As he was “flying” through the exam room earlier this week, the doctor told him that manners could also be a super power. I’m not sure he’s got that one just yet; it probably requires pants.

Raining Aggies

It seems someone stole the treasure.

Treasure
Time to go save the day!

Supremely Blessed

I’ve written about it before–those nights with friends that leave you so full, so blessed, so grateful. It makes me thankful for the friends and support, but it also makes me aware of the others areas in which my life is so deeply blessed.

Last night on my drive home, I reveled in my blessings, and one kept coming to the forefront: my mom–Annie around here.

T&MStreet

I (we) truly have so much love and support from that woman. She is prayerful, thoughtful, and deliberate in our relationship. She has more ability to change and grow–without losing the essence that makes her–than anyone I have ever met. When I have a sick kid, she brings groceries. When I call on a drive, she makes time to talk. Last night, I remembered all the mornings I commuted when we would talk my whole drive. When summers came around, she always told me how much she missed those talks; I don’t think I realized then how valuable they were. She is always open and ready to listen, never offering advice without my asking, never shoulding on things.

Rodeo

I am so, so blessed to have this woman for my mother. I don’t say it nearly enough.

Turkey Time!

It’s fall party day!

Turkey

Our boy is off to school with his handiwork to share with his friends!

Proud

I love when he climbs up next to me at the counter to help. We worked on two dozen cookies, and he helped with all of them. These were great for following directions, counting, sorting, and patterning.

Turkeys

I’m sure these will be gobbled up by his friends!

Or… NOT. My poor baby has been battling an upset tummy all week, and after yesterday, I thought for sure we were in the clear! Nope. He’s missing school again today, and he is not a happy camper about his party (at least he has some turkey cookies to console him when he’s on the mend).

That’s what I get for trying to schedule the post and be on top of things, I guess. HAHA!
