Just a Swingin’

Baby Gray loves to be outside. I looked and looked for an outdoor swing that was for six months and up; the ones I kept finding were nine months. I knew if I could find one, he would like it.

Yesterday we finally got it hung on the back porch; Baby Gray loved it! We’ll be spending plenty of time in that swing, I’m sure!

I Scream; You Scream…

We all scream for ICE CREAM!

A while back, someone suggested the Blue Bell Fun Run to me when I was looking for a 5K to run. The date was out of my six month goal time, but the race looked like fun. This year, they added a 10K progressive relay to their race choices. Aunt B, Auntie Heather, LC, and I decided to run it!

I ran the first leg; LC the second (thank goodness she caught us up); Aunt B and Auntie Heather were the third and fourth legs, but they ran them together. I was pretty proud of my run, even though I was sixteen seconds shy of my goal. I finished my mile in 10:01 before handing off to LC. For the first time EVER (counting high school cross country when I was technically “in shape”) I didn’t finish at the “back of the pack” like I usually do! I was in the middle to front of the group. Crazy!
Auntie Heather saved the day with her arm band; I forgot mine, and I like to run with my GPS timer to coach myself a little. Sadly, my little lady didn’t talk to me during the run. I thought I was keeping my pace until I looked down with about 200 or 300 yards to go. I made up what little time I could in that stretch. I was bummed I didn’t hit my 9:45 goal, but still pleased with a 10 minute mile (I don’t know the last time I saw one of those).

LC caught us up to second place during her leg, and Aunt B & Auntie Heather held it to finish! The group that beat us was co-ed, and they only had us by less than a minute. All the divisions were awarded through third place, so we stuck around for the awards ceremony. Unfortunately, the relay only got an award for first place. No medal, no champion ice cream scoop, nothing.

Sweet Caroline mid-photo shoot… “Bum, bum, bum…”
We got jipped! We did have a lot of fun, though–and a lot of ice cream!

Timing is Everything

We’re running The Blue Bell Fun Run 10K Relay Saturday. I’m running the first leg, which is only a mile. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m slow. Slow. I was trying to pick a goal time for my short little trek, and I thought 10:30 per mile might be reasonable. Then I ran a mile and a half in 10:40 per mile yesterday. I guess 9:45 will be my goal time. I think that sounds a little steep, but what’s the use in a goal if it’s easy?

Eh, What’s Up, Doc?

Baby Gray had his six-month well baby appointment today. He weighed in at 17 pounds, 1 ounce, which is in the 35th percentile. He’s a whopping 26.25 inches long, which is in the 36th percentile. His noggin is 17.25 inches, which is in the 46th percentile. He’s definitely a growing boy, but she had me switch the order I’m feeding solids and milk to see if we can get him to get back on his growth curve a little. We’ll go back in a month to check out his weight.

The nurse who does his shots is lightning fast, and I love it. Baby Gray doesn’t really cry except for a second. He’s such a trooper!

Today he got Bugs Bunny Band-Aids–three of them. He’s never pulled on them or touched them before, but, today, he pulled two out of three off to play with them. He was very interested in the sticky side.

I am still really liking our sweet doctor. She is thorough in checking Baby Gray out without being exhausting, and she talks to me as though I have a little bit of a clue. I really love that! Baby Gray likes her, too. He “talks” to her and plays with whatever tool she’s attempting to check him out with. I feel so blessed to have found a doctor I really trust and like. It’s a relationship we’ll have for quite a while–might as well be a good one!

A Moo, Moo Here, A Moo, Moo There

Mr. Gray’s family is in the beef industry; my family has a cow-calf operation. We’re pretty much a “Beef, It’s What’s For Dinner” type family. When I first started dating Mr. Gray, I was constantly getting picked on for ordering chicken places (that’s changed now because most chicken grosses me out).
Little did I know, Baby Gray was just born with that attitude. When we took his Easter photos today, the photographer had some baby chicks. We put a couple down with him for the photos. At first, he was into it; he picked them up, tried to put them in his mouth, touched them, let them stand on his feet, etc. All of a sudden, though, he just started screaming–he did not want those chicks near him! It was the funniest thing!

Just Give It Away

Somehow, I always have WAY more coupons in my bag than I am ever actually able to use. Yesterday, for example, I had about six Pampers coupons that were all going to expire at the end of the day. While I’m in the store, I usually put coupons of things I don’t buy with the item on the shelf in the store. If I see someone with diapers in their basket that I know I have a coupon for, I’ll find one to give them.

Yesterday as I was approaching the diaper aisle, a lady was walking away with a box of diapers. I hastily dug for a coupon and gave her the first one I found. It was a $2.00 manufacturer’s coupon. Her face lit up, and she said, “You just gave me two dollars!” It made my day. It is truly better to give than receive.
As I got all the coupons out to decide what I needed to buy, I found a Target coupon for $7.00 off (you can use one Target coupon and one manufacturer’s coupon for each item). I stopped what I was doing and went to try to find her. I walked the store several times. I couldn’t imagine the joy should would experience with an additional $7.00 coupon–a total of $9.00.

I never found her. It made me a little sad. I really wanted her to have that coupon. It expired yesterday. I hope someone picked it up and used it (I left it in the diaper aisle).

Batch of Inspiration

Let me just preface this by reminding all my readers (I know there are tons of you, right?) that I am in NO way, shape, or form a Texas Tech fan. Not today. Not ever.

This is an amazingly inspirational piece by Baron Batch, a running back for Tech. There are days I don’t feel like writing. I don’t know how my stories impact people, but I know after reading this that I’ll keep writing. There are links that you might skip over when reading my blog; I urge you not to skip this one. Wow.

Proverbs 31 Woman

A while back, I posted a Facebook status that basically stated all the things I did that Sunday to prepare for the upcoming week. Baby Gray was not here yet; it was still Mr. Gray and I. A friend posted on the status that I sounded like a “Proverbs 31 Woman”. Boy, was I curious.

I whipped out my Bible (who am I kidding, I pulled it up on my phone) and checked out Proverbs 31. Wow. Me? A Proverbs 31 Woman? I could only hope. Since then, I have made it a priority to strive for this. I want my home to be clean, tidy, and ready for my husband and son to enjoy. I want to take care of the laundry, the dishes, the bills, and more–with a joyful heart no less! I do not want to be resentful or ugly in doing so.

As part of my goal list at the beginning of the year, I decided I wanted to take one day each week to hang out at home with Baby Gray. I try to make this day a day he and I can rest, play, and get to know each other. Sure, I know him, but he is changing every single day; I don’t want to miss anything. I have struggled with taking this time and feeling unproductive. I know some down time is okay, but I don’t want to cross the line into lethargy or laziness. Almost always, the day after we hang out at home is followed by a super productive day (I guess it helps to counter-act the day before in my mind). My prayer is to be like the woman described in Proverbs 31.

Proverbs 31:10-31
A good woman is hard to find,
and worth far more than diamonds.
Her husband trusts her without reserve,
and never has reason to regret it.
Never spiteful, she treats him generously
   all her life long.
She shops around for the best yarns and cottons,
   and enjoys knitting and sewing.
She’s like a trading ship that sails to faraway places
   and brings back exotic surprises.
She’s up before dawn, preparing breakfast
for her family and organizing her day.
She looks over a field and buys it,
then, with money she’s put aside, plants a garden.
First thing in the morning, she dresses for work,
rolls up her sleeves, eager to get started.
She senses the worth of her work,
is in no hurry to call it quits for the day.
She’s skilled in the crafts of home and hearth,
   diligent in homemaking.
She’s quick to assist anyone in need,
reaches out to help the poor.
She doesn’t worry about her family when it snows;
their winter clothes are all mended and ready to wear.
She makes her own clothing,
and dresses in colorful linens and silks.
Her husband is greatly respected
when he deliberates with the city fathers.
She designs gowns and sells them,
brings the sweaters she knits to the dress shops.
Her clothes are well-made and elegant,
and she always faces tomorrow with a smile.
When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say,
and she always says it kindly.
She keeps an eye on everyone in her household,
and keeps them all busy and productive.
Her children respect and bless her;
her husband joins in with words of praise:
“Many women have done wonderful things,
   but you’ve outclassed them all!”
Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades.
The woman to be admired and praised
is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God.
Give her everything she deserves!
   Festoon her life with praises!

This is from The Message translation. While I know that it is not a true translation, I love the way this is worded. Regardless of which version you read, it is powerful, and it is something I want to achieve.

My Little Star

Baby Gray’s room still has some things I would like to add to it. One of those things is his name. I’ve had the letters painted for a while, but I hadn’t been able to find the stars I wanted to go on it. Luckily, when we visited the craft store this week, I got that taken care of.

His letters are all starred-up and ready to go! Hopefully we’ll get them hung this week!
