You’ll like ’em! 

One of my favorite things when Baby Gray has a runny nose is Boogie Wipes! I love them! Usually when he gets a runny nose, he gets it in conjunction with gooey eyes. With the mild saline, I can wipe his eyes and his nose without burning, stinging, or irritating his eyes or skin!

I prefer the ones in the green package; I can’t remember which scent that is, but it’s not grape. Bleh.  

Just because I read that I am now supposed to, I need to tell you that Boogie Wipes didn’t pay me or otherwise endorse this post.


An Oldie, but a Goodie!

Today I took it back old school and baked up some original Toll House cookies. Yum! I use all sorts of variations when I bake cookies. I rarely make it back to the good ol’ original. 
Last week, I baked Bisquick’s version of chocolate chip cookies, and I couldn’t remember why I never made the total scratch-made recipe anymore (I told you I was in love with Bisquick). After a little while, I remembered that it made a TON of cookies. I never need or want that many cookies at once. A little while later, I remembered that when Annie & I used to make the Toll House recipe, we doubled it; thus, the too-many-cookies-mystery was solved! 

After I went to the grocery store today, I decided I wanted some cookies. Instead of using the Bisquick recipe I usually have on stand-by for a quick afternoon pick-me-up, I opted for the Toll House recipe. I decided to make only half the recipe just because otherwise I’ll eat them all (or the cookie dough, anyway). Here’s the full recipe; feel free to half it, double it, or otherwise multiply or divide it! 

Nestle Toll House Cookie Recipe
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
1 cup chopped nuts (I don’t add nuts to mine.)
 
  • Preheat oven to 375° F
  • Combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. 
  • Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. 
  • Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. 
  • Gradually beat in flour mixture. 
  • Stir in morsels and nuts. 
  • Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. 
  • Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. 
  • Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.  
 
There you have it! Yum to the nth degree! 
 
Plus, I got a sweet new baking sheet at Target today for 50% off! It’s so stinkin’ cute–lime green! I love it when they get good bakeware in holiday colors so it goes on sale the next day! I got my bundt pan that way, too! 

One of “Those” Ags

When I was a senior in high school, I was accepted to Texas A&M. I had been to the campus twice–once on a bus with an Aggie club to a football game and once with my mom (her first time) for a visit before I made the decision to go to A&M. I told myself I wouldn’t be one of “those Aggies” when I got there (“those people” who choose such an uninvolved path are lovingly known as two-percenters).

One conversation with my brother, and I was done. Done. Done. It was silly to spend that kind of money on a teaching degree, he said. Everyone takes the same test at the end. I was sold. Off I went to Texas A&M University-Kingsville instead. I was eligible for a full-ride, but I waited too long & missed the deadline. I was able to secure plenty of scholarships, though, and I paid my way through school (tuition, anyway) with scholarships.

Mr. Gray’s family is pretty into A&M, so when I graduated from TAMUK, we headed to A&M (where he had always intended to be anyway). I decided to get my MS while we were there, and I also managed to become one of “those Aggies” who is die-hard, bleeds maroon, stands the whole football game, honors God & country, and all else that goes into being an Aggie. I do wear my Aggie Ring upside down, though.

Every year at Muster, I am reminded of how grateful I am to be an Aggie. Wow. What an amazing thing to be a part of. Muster (among other things) makes Texas A&M stand apart from every other school in the nation. Campus Muster is an experience every Aggie should have at least once. The local Muster ceremonies all have their own flavor, and our hometown Muster is no exception. There is an Old Ag who knows The Last Corps Trip by heart and recites it beautifully. I loved it.

Call it a cult, a brainwashing, whatever you like, but it’s a great institution, rich in tradition. I’m glad I turned into one of “those Aggies.”

The Last Corps Trip 

It was Judgment Day in Aggieland
And tenseness filled the air;
All knew there was a trip at hand,
But not a soul knew where.

Assembled on the drill field
Was the world-renowned Twelfth Man,
The entire fighting Aggie team
And the famous Aggie Band.

And out in front with Royal Guard
The reviewing party stood;
St. Peter and his angel staff
Were choosing bad from good.

First he surveyed the Aggie team
And in terms of an angel swore,
“By Jove, I do believe I’ve seen
This gallant group before.

I’ve seen them play since way back when,
And they’ve always had the grit;
I’ve seen ’em lose and I’ve seen ’em win
But I’ve never seen ’em quit.

No need for us to tarry here
Deciding upon their fates;
Tis plain as the halo on my head
That they’ve opened Heaven’s gates.”

And when the Twelfth Man heard this,
They let out a mighty yell
That echoed clear to Heaven
And shook the gates of Hell.

“And what group is this upon the side,”
St. Peter asked his aide,
“That swelled as if to burst with pride
When we our judgment made?”

“Why, sir, that’s the Cadet Corps
That’s known both far and wide
For backing up their fighting team
Whether they won lost or tied.”

“Well, then,” said St. Peter,
“It’s very plain to me
That within the realms of Heaven
They should spend eternity.

And have the Texas Aggie Band
At once commence to play
For their fates too we must decide
Upon this crucial day.”

And the drum major so hearing
Slowly raised his hand
And said, “Boys, let’s play The Spirit
For the last time in Aggieland.”

And the band poured forth the anthem,
In notes both bright and clear
And ten thousand Aggie voices
Sang the song they hold so dear.

And when the band had finished,
St. Peter wiped his eyes
And said, “It’s not so hard to see
They’re meant for Paradise.”

And the colonel of the Cadet Corps said
As he stiffly took his stand,
“It’s just another Corps Trip, boys,
We’ll march in behind the band.”

Not Your Everyday, Ordinary

TOMS!

I love TOMS! I have 6 or 8 pair, including these: 

The talented Mr. Gray whipped these up for me a while back. I had him work off our toss pillows in the living room. (I was planning on posting a photo of the pillow at this point, but I don’t have one and my good friend, Pottery Barn, has taken them down. The pillows are also not currently in our living room. Just trust me. He did a fabulous job taking the “inspiration” I gave him and making it personal.) 

A month or so ago, a girl I have done some work with saw me wearing them and asked about them. I told her who painted them and basically pitched a sale for custom TOMS ala Mr. Gray without really notifying him first.

A week or so later, I had the “inspiration” for her TOMS in hand ready for Mr. Gray to get to work. 

She said she just wanted the basic colors and shapes, not the exact print. 

Voila! She is now the proud owner of a pair of custom TOMS! 

I really want to buy some more just so he can paint them for me. I love that all that talent is right at my disposal! Just to make sure I’m good and carried away, I’ll probably have him paint some for Baby Gray, too!

Kitchen Mash-Up

Sometimes, I really feel like I’m on my A-game in the kitchen. Monday was one of those days. Mr. Gray wanted scallops for dinner. Yes, scallops. That’s all I got. He usually just picks a main ingredient, and I go from there. I was in for quite a rude awakening when I got to the register at HEB; the tiny bag of scallops I was buying was $15.00! Highway robbery! (Why didn’t I notice this before I got to the register, you ask. There was no price. All the other seafood in that area was $6.00 to $8.00, which I felt was reasonable. Why didn’t I refrain from buying the overpriced scallops, you ask. My sweet husband wanted scallops for dinner this week.)

As I continue to state, I will not be a foodie because I don’t take photos of my food. Boo! Please just imagine what I’m trying to describe to you (I promise I’ll use fewer adjectives that Rachael Ray). It’s an exercise in mental pictures! 
Creamy Scallop Pasta
1/3 stick of butter (not margarine, please)
1 package uncooked scallops
Garlic powder
Lemon pepper
McCormick Hot Shot
Fresh spinach
Heavy cream
Pasta of choice (I used whole wheat garlic & basil linguine) 
  • Melt the butter completely in a skillet over medium heat
  • Once it is simmering, add the scallops and cover
  • Add garlic powder, lemon pepper, and Hot Shot to taste
  • Stir scallops and ensure both sides are cooking
  • Once scallops pull apart with a fork, add a heaping handful (or more if you like) of fresh spinach
  • Reduce heat and cover
  • Once the spinach is starting to “wilt” add some heavy cream to the mixture 
  • Stir, stir, stir, you don’t want it to scorch! 
  • Continue to simmer on low until cream and butter are well mixed
  • Add pasta and cover until cooked (you could cook the pasta first and mix if you like; I was using a pasta that cooked quickly, so this was the best method to keep from over-cooking it) 
This was delicious. Mr. Gray really enjoyed it as well. I considered adding cheese, but it turned out perfectly without it. When I find scallops at a more reasonable price, I will make this again!

Eggstra Special Eggstravaganza!

Every year, a wonderful family in our hometown hosts a HUGE Easter party. When Baby Gray was born it was something to the effect of, “Congratulations! I can’t wait to meet him! Save Palm Sunday for me!” (Like she hasn’t been on my calendar for Palm Sunday for as long as I can remember.) Last year, we asked some of our really good friends to come with us, and this year, they came again. Shooby showed Baby Gray the ropes in the petting zoo. 

Last year she got bit by a rabbit, but she didn’t seem to remember this year! (Thank goodness!) She checked out all the animals, but Baby Gray sat that one out. She also jumped in the bounce house, and Baby Gray thought that looked a like fun–next year. 
 In the backyard, they had two smaller areas with baby chicks, baby ducks, and some bunnies. Baby Gray and Mr. Gray checked out the chicks.  Baby Gray didn’t seem to remember how unfond of the chicks he was when we took his Easter photos.

The Eggstravaganza is definitely a sight to behold. I don’t know how many thousand eggs they put out, but it’s a bunch! Each year, they have people leave the eggs and they keep adding! 

 Baby Gray didn’t get to pick any eggs up, but between Shooby and WPM, he had plenty! 

What a sweetie, that WPM! These two are going to be big buddies–I just know it! 

We attempted to get a photo of Shooby and Baby Gray, but it didn’t work out so well. 

Notice she’s “hiding” in her basket… It was full of yummy candy she wasn’t supposed to be eating right then. Sneaky, sneaky, Shooby!

I can’t wait until next year when Baby Gray will be more into it! He enjoyed chewing on the eggs this year, that’s probably better for his teeth than the candy he’ll want next year!

Take Me Out to the Ballgame…

Last weekend, my nephew conveniently had two t-ball games instead of just one. We took the opportunity to make the trip south to make our trip a little more worth the while. My little stud is the third baseman, and he is quite the hitter–he has had at least one homerun in every game so far!


He’s pretty serious on the field, so I loved when he was back pedaling to third base and tripped himself up! Those feet went straight up in the air! 

This is much more like it! He’s got a great arm, too! 

Rounding those bases to head home! Go, 10, go! 

Mr. Mischief, here, is a whole ‘nother story! Don’t those baby blues just melt your heart, though? The snow-cone-blue lips are pretty killer, too! 

Of course, no trip south would be complete without a Harrell’s vanilla Dr Pepper and a trip to Lydia’s! 

We had a yummy breakfast with great company! G was finally in town when we were down–we always seem to miss her! Thanks for meeting us, ladies! 

My nephew’s team won both games while we were there, and they’re undefeated this season (a big turn around since last season). I can’t wait to watch him as he grows–and get ol’ Mr. Mischief playing, too!

Is There a Twelve-Step for That?

I had intentions of coming home and posting a couple of great blogs about our eventful weekend. Then I got ready to upload photos, and I realized I had taken 250+ photos from what actually amounted to less than four hours of activities. 

Even though I’m a lazy photo editor (read: I don’t edit, I just add my blog title) most of the time, it still takes too long to sort and get the photos I really want on here figured out. Maybe I should assimilate my lazy editing style over to my clicky shooting finger to alleviate this problem. Long whine short: I’ll blog about our weekend tomorrow and probably Tuesday. I’ll leave you with this, though:

He Puts a Smile on My Face

The funniest things amuse Baby Gray. The other night, all he needed to be happy was a bag of (unopened) Cadbury eggs and the occasional suck on his paci. 

Then someone stuck a paper towel on his head; he didn’t even notice. He was sure cute, though!
