Dance Dance Revolution

Friday night, we had our big volunteer party for church: Prom of All Ages. Basically, pick your decade, get dressed up, and come have a blast.

I went for a modest 70s get-up and decided I was probably best suited for the teacher chaperone role. (No, I have no idea who that girl on the left is; that was just what I used for my outfit inspiration.)

We had so much fun! It was a great evening, complete with a prom king and queen, prizes, food, and all sorts of stuff. (And, yes, that’s Mal’s real hair.)

Such a fun evening with fun people!

Great Minds

Mr. Gray was gone this weekend, so I decided Baby Gray and I would head to the airport after church to surprise him then have a little family date in Austin. Who doesn’t love a family date?

As we were wrapping up at church, I noticed Mr. Gray had called a few times and sent me a text. He must be bored waiting on his plane, I thought. It didn’t take long to realize that was not the case.

I grabbed lunch and headed home. It didn’t matter where he was, I was just happy he was back! And… when I got there, part of my date day awaited me!

Amy's Ice Cream

He brought Amy’s!

I love that we had the same thoughts about surprising each other and enjoying some Amy’s Ice Cream on that lovely Sunday afternoon as we got our family was back together!

Nothing But a G Thing

Compiling these photos every week brings the biggest smile to my face. This kid absolutely cracks me up–even the photos that aren’t always the funniest.

The cap is goofy, but see the G on his back? He’s sportin’ his name proudly. Or his sticker. Probably the sticker. Hopefully one day the name.

Surprise naptime wardrobe change! It’s a nekky baby! Yes, he’s probably going to continue to sleep with a paci until he’s a grown man; no I do not wish to break that habit right now. He sleeps entirely too well.

And, for good measure, a Baby Gray tongue photo–his favorite!

Sometimes

Sometimes the best things are the tiniest things:
  • Like ice cream on the river (even when it’s cool out)
  • Or having a conversation with your son and being able to forget he’s two
  • Or never wanting to forget he’s two because the moments tick by too quickly as it is
  • Or watching him grow and learn with each new experience he has
  • Or seeing his face light up at the sight of his white shirt in a black light
  • Or that face he makes when riding in an elevator
  • Or when he looks up and says, “I like you, Mom.”
  • Or the times he says, “I have the sweetest Daddy.” (Yes, yes you do.)
  • Or sneaking away to cuddle your best friend’s baby without your baby so you can truly soak her up and enjoy her and all the newborn memories that come flooding back each time you hold a new baby
  • Or the way a day of running errands, tons of driving, and too much to do turned into a day full of simple blessings

Pat-A-Cake, Pat-A-Cake, Baker’s Man

One of my favorite things about being home with Baby Gray is that we can try pretty much anything he wants to try. This weekend, he decided he wanted to make cupcakes. We didn’t have time that day, but I told him we could get stuff to make them when we went to the store Monday. Then I completely forgot about it.

Luckily, an elephant never forgets (yes, I just compared my son to an elephant), and he reminded me as we strolled through the door. I wanted this to be a project for him, so I opted for a cake mix and soda cake* instead of taking the time to do it from scratch; his attention span isn’t quite that long just yet. He got to pick the cake mix he wanted and everything.

When we got home, the first thing he asked to do was bake. So, we did.

 Getting Ready

He helped pour and stir; he loved it! He especially liked picking out the cupcake liners (I have quite an array to choose from) and putting them in the baking tin.

We popped them in the oven, and he could hardly wait to enjoy.

Baking
When it was time to frost them, I just whipped up some whipped cream and added food coloring to tint. He chose green to match our St. Patrick’s Day flag at the front door (somehow we decided these would be St. Patrick’s Day cupcakes along the way). He wasn’t too sure about putting the sprinkles on; he kept worrying they were too messy (he might be mine).
Cupcakes
His favorite part, of course, was eating his cupcakes! He was so proud.

It was such a fun afternoon. We will definitely be baking again!

*Choose a box of cake mix and any flavor soda. Mix one box of cake mix with one can of soda and bake at 350 degrees. Baking times vary based on pan size.

Always, Never the Same

Sometimes it’s vacation time, and we plan something completely different than anything we’ve done before. It’s a tiny risk, but it usually has a great return.

Other times, it’s an annual work trip, and we plan things almost exactly the same. Similar hotel, same dinner reservations where I’ll enjoy the same filet mignon, the same salad, and the same sides. Very little risk, but also a great return. It’s good every year, so we keep doing it.

DFW
Last year we mixed it up a little with a carriage ride. Risky!

How do we determine when to mix it up, though? When is time to take a risk, and when is it time to hang tight and keep doin’ what we’re doin’? Isn’t this the way we live our lives, too? Sometimes we stay where we are; sometimes we mix it up. Why? How do we know? How do we keep from getting in a rut?

For me, it’s all about balance. If we did everything exactly the same all the time, life would be boring. If we never repeated anything good, life would only be a guessing game. I like a little of both. Sometimes it’s fun to return to things that are good. Other times, it’s fun to try something that might be good. As a matter of fact, some of our best memories are from times that might have been good–but weren’t! Sushi in a napkin at a new place, anyone?

Still, other times, it’s a clear call from God. It might come in a song, a message from a friend, or a conversation with Mr. Gray, but when it is clearly from Him, it’s time to follow.

Risk. Change. Chances. They all allow growth and return in our lives. What’s worth a risk today?

Funny Fashion

Lately Baby Gray has been into dressing the part of whatever he’s doing. Whatever he happens to have on his head turns into a cowboy hat, a hockey helmet, or a batting helmet, among other things. He’s always got something up his sleeve!

Here he is, on two different occasions, all ready to play baseball!

Baseball

Batting
Excuse the blurriness, this one was taken through the window screen, but it’s so adorable to me. He has on Mr. Gray’s college baseball cap and my batting gloves, or “baseball mittens,” as he calls them. So cute!

Then it was time to play a little hockey!

Hockey

Once his hockey game was over, we had an errand or two to run. Who knew grunge (complete with athletic pants and boots) was back in style?

Later it was time for work; his hard hat says “Boss” on it, which, of course, made me think of the joke:

What do you call an Aggie after graduation?
Boss

Seemed fitting.

Boss

He got in touch with his artsy side this week, too. Although, he was not excited about the smock at all.

Sometimes, though, he’s still just our silly boy!

Talking Points

Sometimes the conversations I have with Baby Gray just crack me up. He is very verbal, and I never know what’s going to come out of his mouth next. Here’s a little snippet of what went down as we left Target yesterday.

Headband
Rubberband

Baby Gray: What is this called?
Me: A rubber band.
Baby Gray: No, it’s a headband.
Me: You’re silly.
Baby Gray: No, I’m awesome!

At least he’s got a healthy self esteem!

Change Your Game

Most days, I enjoy dressing cute and looking all trendy-like. Some days, though? Not so much. Rarely do I post photos of myself here to tell folks all about what I wore (even when I happen to think I looked great). That’s not what this space is about.

Wedding

However, I was falling into a bit of a yoga-pant-wearin’ slump a few weeks ago. I was even wearing them in public–regularly (and I don’t mean for working out). Yikes! The girl who was voted best dressed in high school (also me) probably never would have predicted that. Then I stumbled across this post. “Clothed in strength and dignity,” huh? Wow. I hadn’t thought of it that way. The post really convicted me–not because God cares what we wear, but because I feel better when I’m lookin’ cute! I am more productive. I am more confident. I am stronger. I am more dignified. I’d even argue I’m a better wife. I’ve definitely been known to call Mr. Gray during his work day to change dinner plans from at-home to out-on-the-town based on my outfit. Impromptu date night? Yes, please! Clothing can be a game changer.

Family Photo

I’m not saying it’s never okay to hang out at home with your toddler in your yoga pants. I’m just saying that for me, I don’t want it to be the norm.

Strength and dignity are her clothing, And she smiles at the future. –Proverbs 31:25, NASB
