Restored

Sometimes when things are broken, we learn to compensate. We lower our expectations to think there can never be restoration in the broken. We forget how big our God is.
I got a message Friday that reminded me how good our God truly is–how much He is working behind the scenes when I don’t have a clue. A situation that I have been in close proximity to since fifth grade has come completely full circle and is in a healthy, glorified place.
The funny God thing is I had that exact situation, that I haven’t thought specifically about in years, on my heart early last week. I had a very vivid memory of the beginning of the story–very vivid. Down to the car being driven, which really has nothing to do with it at all. Down to the rug on my living room floor, which, again, has nothing to do with anything. But God freshened up my heart so that I’d be ready to receive the news of the restoration Friday. Such a faithful and sovereign God we serve. He knew. He knew in fifth grade how this would turn out. He knew His plan would prevail. He has washed the slate clean; made it white as snow.

Four Letters

This edition of Fashion Friday is brought to you by the number two (I know, I know… I promise I’m almost finished with that).
In some mushy gushy part of my brain, this name on the back of his jersey kind of did me in. It makes my heart swell with pride, nostalgia, and all sorts of emotions. It definitely took me back when I first saw it. Back to his daddy with the same name on his jersey. Back to game days when we were younger. Back to a baseball diamond (yes, I know this is a football jersey) where my husband’s heart is. Back to Friday night lights. Back to freezing in the bleachers. Back to Luling in the rain. Back to road trips and pit stops. Back to friends and teammates. These four letters take me back.

A few days later, in true Baby Gray style, these four letters remind me we have a lot to look forward to, too!

I had other photos for today, but I think these two pretty much perfectly sum up this week.

Terrific Twos

The Terrific Twos are off to a great start! We had such a fun day yesterday celebrating Baby Gray!
Our morning was much like last year, balloons and a number pancake to start the day.

He has gymnastics on Wednesdays, and he got a special prize from the prize wheel for his birthday.  He thought he was hot stuff getting special treatment like that. It might be a little disappointing next week.
We headed to the hometown for lunch with the Mr. Gray and the grandparents, followed by a quick trip out to PawPaw’s house. He played until he couldn’t play anymore, and then we headed home for a nap.
After a great nap, we had the best time playing outside with footballs and balloons.

I can’t wait to see what this year has in store for Baby Gray! It’s going to be a blast!

My Baby You’ll Be

Last night, I tucked in my one year old for the last time.
Last Night
This morning, a sweet two year old boy was in his place.
Birthday Boy
While it seems silly to define it that way, I have noticed so many differences the past few weeks. Our sweet boy is growing up. I could go on and on about what he does and doesn’t do, how much he’s grown, the smiles he brings, and all the hilarious stuff he says, but I’d rather just be present.
Robert Munsch pretty much nailed it–with the exception of the creepy mom sneaking in the window, of course. I won’t be doing that.
We read this last night, with my baby snuggled in my arms. It was such a sweet time. We ended the night with, “How old will you be when you wake up tomorrow?”
“TWO!” he said.
And he is. Today he is two and we are even more in love with him than we were on this precious day two years ago.

Picasso, Baby

Last week, I was working on a project for Halloween in which I was painting. A lot. Later in the week, Mr. Gray was working on a project for me in which he painted. Baby Gray doesn’t love finger painting–he doesn’t like his hands to be dirty like that. He was quite curious about painting with a brush, though.
So we tried it out.
Painting
He did great! Nothing on his clothes; only one or two little misses to the table; and a smidge on his hands that he wanted wiped off pretty much immediately.
Paint Hands
I found this little dollop in his hair that was a total accident. He didn’t realize how long his brush was!
Paint Mess
I think I’ll mat and frame his first piece in this medium.

Go, Baby Gray, Go!

It’s no secret I love planning a party. I usually start conjuring up Baby Gray’s birthday party ideas well in advance. I remember a phone call to Bean back in December (yes, he was only 15 months old then) that went a little like this:

Me: If we go ahead with the football party idea, is it ridiculous to ask Mr. Gray to paint the yard like a football field?
Bean: Absolutely not! That would be awesome!
Me: I didn’t think so, either. And, yeah, I called you because I needed someone on my side in case there were any objections, and I knew you would be.

Mr. Gray kindly agreed (in December) to paint a football field for Baby Gray’s second birthday.

Preparation was in full swing–invitations dreamed up, found and ordered; Baby Gray’s jersey ordered; super simple menu planned out; pinata ordered; picking up things here and there that coordinated. The office/art room looked like a football party threw up–I knew I was on the right track!

Starting last week sometime, as everything else was coming together, I went into panicky-I’m-not-going-to-have-a-football-field-and-goal-posts-mode. Mr. Gray assured me he would take care of it, and I continued to panic that was that.

Until, it got real…

Then I knew it was all going to be all right. You see, sometimes I have these great visions, but only Mr. Gray can bring them to reality. It’s hard for me to relinquish that control. He always pulls through, though.

We kept the yard hidden from Baby Gray until his party, which turned out to be pretty easy.

We were at church most of the day, he had a quick birthday visit with Uncle Clay, and then he crashed until party time.

When he woke up, it was party time! We grabbed his jersey and got ready to head outside.

Lots of people were already here to celebrate. So, he walked out to see tons of smiling faces and his foo-fall party.

Football13

He had an absolute blast. He played football with anyone who would play with him.

Little C and Shooby cheered him on, and at one point or another, everyone joined in. They were pretty good cheerleaders–at one point, almost the entire party was chanting, “Go, Baby Gray, go!” He was lovin’ it!

He said farewell to all his guests, but the good-byes didn’t keep him from enjoying himself.

As the sun set on Gray Stadium, Baby Gray cried and cried. It was time to take a bath and get ready for bed–he didn’t want the day to end.

And, for the record, I didn’t forget to include a family photo–we forgot to take one! Yikes!

Nap in a Cap

Sometimes I’m not sure where this kid comes up with this stuff. He had a little help from stylists Bean, Shooby, and Little C this week, but, other than that, it’s all him.
He was lovin’ the hair drawer that Shooby shared with him Saturday. No better way to get your game face on that to add a little sparkle!

Party Time
Those girls bring out his best fashion sense.
There was some guy time, too, though. After lots of dirt and sticky muffins, it was bath time–sans extra clothes.
Clean
To make up for Saturday’s missing clothes, he put on as many sets of socks and jammers as he could.

He tested a mask or two while we party shopped. He decided he liked our original costume idea better.

It finally got cool enough for him to bust out his boots and jeans for a bit.
Country Boy
Ultimately, he found a good balance between no clothes and too many clothes all on his own.

He even napped that way.

Order Up

To say Baby Gray likes The Jumpy Place is a bit of an understatement. He always has such a blast. It is a safe place that is set up for little ones to be able to run, play, and be successful (of course, by run and play, I meant read a magazine or three).

Magazine

I love that he is starting to branch out and become more independent while we’re there. He got into some bounce houses on his own, he played with his friends, he turned it into a water park drank from the water fountain, and he even tried to order his own snack!

Order Up

The lady who works there is always super sweet, and she is great with the kids. I’m so glad a place like this exists–I just wish I had thought of it!

Also, note to moms: apparently orange is the color to wear in order to spot your child. Let’s all coordinate that again next visit.

Rational Rationale

Once there was a quiet little family of three. The matriarch of the family was extremely rational in her thinking, never assuming that an unanswered phone meant a car wreck had left her beloved husband injured in a ditch. Such an event certainly never meant incessant calling until her husband could assure her he was, in fact, alive and well.
Then came one night, in the middle of a tumultuous week, when the lovely bride completely lost it. Her husband had gone out for a run along his usual path, the school that is less than a hundred yards from their front door. It was dark. It had been a tumultuous week. The baby was in bed. The house was quiet. It had been a tumultuous week. Her husband seemed as though he would never return. She watched out the window for his shadow making the loop around the school. Nothing. She sent a text (because that is definitely the easiest form of communication for those who are running in the dark with their phone in an arm band). Nothing. She called. A breathy answer, “I’m fine.”
Lights
Her fears subsided for a bit. She checked the window again. Nothing. Then she remembered a secret an unnamed, also rational friend had told her: use the Find My iPhone function. She did. She watched the little dot “run” across the screen. Peace of mind.
Her long overdue husband came home. They lived happily ever after.

I Know the Muffin Man

I’ve been slackin’ on the recipe front lately, but it’s not because I haven’t been cooking. It’s just because I haven’t been documenting. I’m still meal planning and cooking our weeknight meals.
Baby Gray’s love for waffles seems to be waning, but he loves muffins, pancakes, and the like, so I decided to make him some I didn’t mind him eating “too many” of.
Muffins
I made a variation of these a while back, but, of course, I changed it up a little with these.

You will need:
6 TBSP butter, softened
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
2 bananas, mashed (or just throw them in your Kitchen Aid if that’s how you roll)
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
Heaping 1/4 cup matchstick (or grated if you’re up to it) carrots
1/2 cup quick-cooking oatmeal
2 eggs
1/2 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
Nutmeg
Cinnamon
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  • Generously grease (or line with paper muffin liners) 2 mini-muffin pans
  • Cream butter (another secret of the Kitchen Aid: I don’t let my butter soften first; I just cream it with the mixer and it works fine) and brown sugar together
  • Add the bananas–you can pre-mash them or allow the mixer to do the work
  • Mix in applesauce, carrots, and oatmeal
  • Add eggs
  • Once well blended, add in flour slowly
  • Add baking soda
  • Sprinkle in desired amount of nutmeg and cinnamon
  • Use a tablespoon or cookie scoop to spoon muffin batter into the mini-muffin tins; fill each cup about three-quarters full.
  • Bake for 12 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into center
  • Yields about three dozen mini-muffins
  • Use or freeze within two days of baking
