On My Heart

We have had several friends get engaged lately, and it has had me in a reflection mode. We’re fast approaching seven years of marriage–less than two weeks from now–and quite frankly, it seems more like a lifetime ago (in a good way).

I thought I’d share a few quick things I’ve had on my heart lately:

  • It will get better. No matter what you’re going through, and how bad it seems, it will get better (trust me, but see the next one before checking out).
  • It will get worse. No matter what you’re going through, and how good it seems, it will get worse (see what I did there? It’s that can’t-get-to-the-mountain-without-the-valley-phenomenon).
  • Your spouse carries more power to speak into your life than anyone else in the entire world. Be on the same team; be each other’s biggest fan.
  • There is no perfect time–for kids, for moving, for any of those big decisions. Step out in faith when it’s most right.
  • Have fun! Whatever it takes, have fun together. If it’s after the kids go to bed in your living room, that’s okay; it doesn’t have to be anything big and fancy. Just have fun together and remember why you like each other in the first place.

We still have a lot to learn and a lifetime to go. I can’t wait to do it together!

Side Pony Sun Tan

This weekend was rainy on and off. Baby Gray played in the rain while he swam Friday as we waited for Mr. Gray to come home and take us to the beach!

Swimming

Our drive was a little soggy, but we made it!

We had a blast playing, eating crawfish and homemade ice cream, and enjoying friends. I was secretly dreading the night in the hotel because Baby Gray usually has so much trouble sleeping if he’s not in his own room. Much to my surprise, though, he did great! It was a pleasant change.

Saturday morning, we headed to the beach, and Mr. Gray met us after they were done fishing. Baby Gray searched for his old friend Tom the Crab to no avail. We built some sand castles and Baby Gray enjoyed the playground before he had had enough beach.

Bucket Head

We headed back to the hotel to shower and get cleaned up for the ride home.

Packing and Waiting

As we walked out, it started pouring! Luckily, we had the perfect beach morning, completely unscathed!

Sunday morning, we were off to church; again, there was on-again-off-again rain coming down. I dressed in my rain gear (complete with side pony; hello, 1989) and went to work on our event for after church.

On the way home, my neck was itchy. A quick check in the mirror revealed sunburn. Really? I went dressed for rain and came home sunburned? Only me (and only I would fail to take a photo of the irony).

Clothes & Camera Optional

Fashion Friday is upon us! This cool kid never disappoints.

Baby Gray got a batting helmet this weekend, so he has been wearing it pretty much everywhere; I’m bummed I don’t have more photos of those outfits!

He also got a lot more use out of his cape this week. It made its HEB debut Monday, but I didn’t get a photo of that, either (this is a week full of missed photo ops, I suppose).

For a boy who doesn’t like masks, he sure was excited about this one!

And, of course, sometimes clothes are completely optional.

I’m On a Boat!

Uncle Clay got a boat a few weeks ago, and he took Baby Gray out for a ride yesterday afternoon.

Now, being that he is mine, Baby Gray is always a little cautious and tentative about things at first. I love his cautious little not-sure-what’s-going-on grin!

It was only a matter of seconds, though, before he was lovin’ every minute of it. He was walking around, driving, putting his hands in the water–completely comfortable. We have never seen him get so comfortable so quickly with anything.

I see wake boards and water skis in our future–or maybe some fishing. I have a feeling there’s no stopping this water baby now!

Mother's Day

It’s amazing to me how being a mother changes the frame through which tragedies are seen. Those times when there is full awareness of how life can change in an instant, but gratitude for another moment fills the soul. Another smile, another hug, another “I love you.”

My prayers are with those in the path of destruction as well as their loved ones.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” –Isaiah 41:10

What I Love About Mondays

Unlike the rest of the world (at least according to Facebook and Twitter), I happen to love Mondays. When I do my Mondays right, I feel so productive and prepared.

Take this morning, for example. I have already prepped three meals (two freezer and tonight’s), cleaned out the fridge, planned our menu for the week (have I mentioned how much I love meal planning lately?), made my grocery list, and am almost ready to head to HEB (by way of the library and the cleaners). I love that feeling! I try hard not to schedule meetings or appointments on Mondays, specifically so I can prepare for the week.

When I take the time to prepare on Monday, the rest of the week goes so much more smoothly.

Speaking of meal planning, if you haven’t jumped on the wagon yet, today’s a great day to start! Our non-negotiable this week is from Life on Leroy–I can’t wait to try it!

What are you making this week?

Dino Teeth

Baby Gray had his first dentist visit yesterday.

We prepped a little the night before by checking out the office’s Facebook page and photos. By the time we got there, he was so excited about the waiting room alone that I didn’t know if I’d be able to get him to go see the dentist!

Luckily, our wait was just long enough for him to explore all his options. (Related: do not ask me to play Guitar Hero. Ever. Wow. Just wow.)

We went into the exam room they have set up for the “Little Gators” under three, and he was in love! It was the perfect change of scenery to keep him entertained for the rest of the visit. The actual exam was super short; he sat in my lap, laid back into the dentist’s lap. She did a great job being thorough but also aware of how much time she had to work before he got restless.

He came home with a new toothbrush, a mirror on a stick, and a bag full of prizes. I’d say it was a hit!

No Glory in Busy

Lately, it has seemed as though we are slowing down some. My thing is, I don’t necessarily want to be as busy as we sometimes are, but it’s hard to cut out things that are, in and of themselves, good.

Last fall, I heard a message from Kelly Dykstra that changed my thinking on this quite a bit. It has helped me keep my balance and allowed me to say no to things when I need to.

Truly, there is no glory in busy. It’s not a contest. It’s not a race. No medal is awarded at the end. I’ll take re-reading a favorite book and a date night with Mr. Gray over too busy any day.

Too much good stuff is still too much.
